Hi,

I have installed Oracle enterprise linux using Vmware on Windows Vista as host. My problem is if i assign IP to linux machine i am not able to ping the guest machine and i can't access internet also. I want to ping the guest machine from the host machine and vice versa. i have gone through many discussions but none were useful. The network setting on vm player shows as host only. what are the setting i should do to ping the guest machine from the host machine and reverse. pls help i am new to networking.

Welcome to the forums!

Which networking do you use for the virtual network adapter (bridged, host-only or NAT)?

Post "ifconfig -a" from the guest and "ipconfig /all" from the host.

which type of connection should i use to ping my guest machine NAT or Bridge or Host only ? the default is NAT now and i am doing this at home so i will not have any LAN connection even if there is NIC present in my laptop

If your virtual network adapter is set to NAT you use the wrong IP subnet range. The subnet range you actually use (192.168.1.0) must be used when your virtual NIC is set to "bridged" as this connects the guest to the physical network transparently.

When you want to use NAT either use DHCP in the guest or set it to an IP address of: 192.168.179.10 (example).
