the connection to usb device ... was unsucessful (driver error)

I get the above message when trying to connect a non-virtualised smartcard reader to a Server 2003 guest, running workstation 7.1 on Windows 7 (x64) host.

Any ideas?

Thanks Andreas. I've checked all the docs and google and I can't find any reference to the particular error message!

did you remove all driveletters eventually occupied by this device on the host ?

is this a onboard-device or a regular external USB-device ?

The device is a smartcard reader; no drive letters.
