i have just purchased a sony laptop. as you all may know it comes pre-loaded with win 7 and no win 7 installation dvd. is there anyway to load a virtual machine with the win 7 os from the sony recovery partition or using the recovery disks?
thanking you in advance.

Sometimes there is a utility pre-installed on laptops to burn a set of recovery DVDs from the files stored on the recovery partitions. However, usually the ecovery DVDs only work on that manufacturer's hardware.
So if you have a Sony recovery DVD you can only use it to reinstall Win7 onto a Sony laptop (not into a VMware Guest running on that laptop.
Try the scenario "physical machine SATA" - VMware LSI SAS - Hotclone"
from my notes here http://sanbarrow.com/p2v2008r2.html
I have good experience with that for Win7 as well

thanks continum, but that is a bit deeper than i care to go.
I agree - it is a bit tricky for the first time - it gets fluid if you have done it a few times ...
for a few bucks you can get a nice LiveCD from Paragon who can do the job quite well also
