Bridged networking stopped working.
The solution was to specify the NIC in vmnetcfg, "bridged to"
No networking changes were made to cause this, not by a human, anyway.
The downtime was as long as 3 days, during which updates were run and the system was rebooted, this is likely the cause.
Lucky the affected systems were not of 24/7 importance.
Problem solved.
