recently I saw a few VMs with this entry in the vmx
scsi0.pciSlotNumber = 160
what the heck is it - it should be 16 right ?

Other possibility is LSI-SAS, which is a PCIe card and I don't recall where the base slot number for PCIe is, but it might be 160. PCI and PCIe occupy the same slot number namespace.

thanks - that was the missing piece.
You are right - all the VMs where I have seen this entry used SAS-controller

scsi1.present = "TRUE"
scsi1.virtualDev = "lsisas1068"
scsi1.pciSlotNumber = "161"
scsi2.present = "TRUE"
scsi2.virtualDev = "lsisas1068"
scsi2.pciSlotNumber = "162"
scsi3.present = "TRUE"
scsi3.virtualDev = "lsisas1068"
scsi3.pciSlotNumber = "163"
