"Setup failed to install the mouse driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually."

Jump to solution

I just installed VMware Workstation 7.1.3 and when I upgraded the VMware Tools in a Windows 7 Ultimate x64 guest, I received the following error message:

Setup failed to install the mouse driver automatically. This driver will have to be installed manually.

Everything seems to work fine and there are no issues shown in Device Manager. My mouse driver (i.e. VMware Pointing Device) is v12.4.0.6 and is dated 11/17/2009.

Has anyone else encountered this and is there a fix for it?

Note that VMware Tools installed into Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 with no problems.

Microsoft Installer (MSI) is a weird thing, so these problems happen.

The best way to update VMWare Tools is to delete them (and any other Windows drivers too), then install their new version.

There's no workaround for your problem. Smiley Wink
