"Cannot determine local file size" when trying a file copy host>guest

Hi,

I receive the "Cannot determine local file size You may not have permission to perform the operation Aborting the file copy operation" message when trying to copy a file from a local hard drive (any of them) to the guest desktop.

I tried this both by drag'n drop or copy/paste.

Sometimes though it works because I remember copying files this way.

Does this have something to do with the file name ? (many dots in it)

Environment :

Host = XP

Guest = XP

File size = 11 Mb

Sample File name = Setupv1.1.3.exe

Any help would be appreciated.

The problem seems to be solved when rebooting the Host.

Clues to find the cause :

\- most of the times I just 'hibernate' the host when quiting my job

\- most of the times I just 'suspend' the guests to come back when I'll need them

\- I use a lot of USB 2 devices which can be plugged/unplugged anytime

...

Maybe a combination of this caused the guest and the host to be unable to communicate anymore until reboot ?

Another clue maybe : I am using Norton antivirus 10.0.2.2002

The file to copy may be locked while VMW tries to lock it for copy ?

What about you guys ?

Hi Lil,

same behaviour here. I've described a likely cause in another post, "WS6 Drag & Drop bug if path contains non-ASCII char". Does that match your problem?

Indeed it seems that the "non ASCII" characters can be the cause.

In fact these are ASCII but not in the same code page I think.

Note that once the drag/drop failed because of this, there is no way to copy any other file by drag/drop (forbiden sign as mouse cursor).

I can only restart the VM as it seems that the Dnd hanged ....

Thanks again for your help.

I have the same problem, I agree for non-ASCII chars...

With ASCII only, not any bug

Had the same problem today. My file had non-ASCII European characters.

I have the same problem.

If the file and the path contain Japanese, a message come out.

In VMware5.5(English), the copy was successful.

Host:

WinXPSP2(Japanese) + VMware6.0(English)

Guest:

WinXPSP2(Japanese)

Maybe it is the same problem : using the shared folders the explorer hangs if browsing a folder with french characters.

No workaround found, I have to restart the guest every time.

If I use a USB drive instead of shared folders, everything seems to be ok...
