I'd just tried an "Easy install" of a Linux OS (openSUSE 13.1) to see if it succeeded. Not surprisingly it failed - I don't have the vmware.log since my aim was to get a bootable CD for another machine. I can say that the virtual hard drive was not recognized however when I went back to the partitioner . I myself have not seen a Linux Easy Install succeed - perhaps others have.
Custom install worked fine and I wanted that anyway to use the BTRFS filesystem
