Question :

can I directly connect the wired network adapter to the VM machine, and leave the host with a wireless network. using workstation pro 15 host is ubuntu vm client is Windows 10

Yes.  In the host's properties for the wired NIC, uncheck all except the VMware Bridge Protocol service.  This will make your host unable to use the NIC, but will allow VMware to use it for guest VMs.

Sorry, just noticed it was Linux host and Windows guest.  I'm sure there is a similar method on Linux, but don't know what it is.
