memory problem on linux host?

Hi,

i'm running a Windows XP Sp2 virtual machine with 512 megs of ram on a XUbuntu 7.10 distro.

When my VM is power up, the memory size used by vmware-vmx.exe is 0....why? On a windows host, the same virtual machine, the process take more than 512 megs of ram.

Why on linux the process do not use the part of ram that the VM need?

Thanks!

I got the same problem many times. I'm eager to know how the Vmware is working. My Vm version is Vmware Workstation 6.5 with my host OS , Ubuntu 8.10. For example, when I created a VM guest system and assinning 512M RAM for it . When the guset OS is running on the Windows OS, it will get 512M RAM,but it is only using 60M of the 512M RAM when it running on the Ubuntu 8.10. How can I do??

Is this causing the VM not to run or do too much swapping? What is the problem?

I am running on a SUSE 11.0 host, and with both a Vista and a Server 2008 VM running, I see the following from top:

>>top | grep vmware

>>

>>6643 lou 20 0 1266m 1.0g 987m S 4 12.5 13:18.27 vmware-vmx

>> 6186 lou 20 0 158m 63m 30m S 2 0.8 1:17.58 vmware

>>7052 lou 20 0 1590m 1.2g 1.2g D 11 15.6 19:30.28 vmware-vmx

Both are allocated 1GB of RAM in settings. My system has 8GB of RAM

PID 7052 is a new install of W2008 with M.O.S.S and I am still setting it up. It will need more RAM when SQL server and M.O.S.S are installed. Bloat, Bloat. Smiley Happy

That is so weird.

Maybe Windows is using too much ram.

Maybe Linux is using too les ram cause its so awesome... :3

Maybe there is a glitch in the memory on the VM or host?

Try booting on a *buntu CD/DVD and picking test memory or something like that.

If it finds problems, there ya go.

If it dosen't, try the same on the VM.
