login hang on Windows 7

My system is running Win7x64; Access Controls required       (must supply password to login).  Currently running VMware 6.5.5.

I have noticed with VMWare 6.5+ on Windows 7 that my host machine would hang at the login screen to enter the login password after choosing an account to login with.

After experimenting with MSCONFIG and disabling all services, then gradually adding them back testing the system each time, I found that when I enabled the VMware Authorization Service, the Windows 7 host machine will hang indefinitely (> 6-7 hours) after selecting an account to login with and before the password entry screen is displayed.

With the VMware Authorization Service disabled, my system boots clean with no errors.

With VMware Authorization Service ENABLED, my system has the following errors in the System Event log:

it is a known problem that the vmauthdservice hangs on Windows 7 - try delayed start.
that kb applies to win2000 and
winmanagement is not WMI - look up the service description in regedit

if delayed start does not help - list the other apps you have installed on that host

you can either disable that service completely - or set it to delayed start.

vmauthdservice is only necessary for non admin-users, for unity and to re-attach a GUI to a VM running in the background

It sounds like a problem as same as described here - http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=128269...

If you are going to follow the above KB to fix this problem, don't forget to backup your registry. As you know, windows registries are the place where we shouldn't work on.

Thanks,

Ganesh

Thanks for the pointer.

This KB describes adding a DependOnService entry to the VMAuthdService for Windows Server 2000.  The article describes adding:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\VMAuthdService]
"DependOnService"=hex(7):76,00,6d,00,78,00,38,00,36,00,00,00,77,00,6d,00,69,00,00,00,00,00

Which is the hex representation of printable characters and translates to:

"DependOnService"= "vmx86 wmi"

My Windows 7 system already has a DependOnService REG_MULTI_SZ key with a value of "vmx86 winmgmt"

As best as I can tell, winmgmt on Windows 7 is the service for WMI.

Any other ideas?

Thanks for your response.

Running VMware with elevated privileges does work better, however I prefer not to run VMware with elevated privileges.

Other suggestions?

Do you have a suggestion for a starting point for the delay?

  • 3 sec
  • 30 sec
  • 300 sec
  • 3000 sec

Any idea what service vmauthdservice depends on that it must delay wait for?

Thanks.

sorry - don't know for sure - we have discussed several cases in the past - all slightly different

the vmauthdservice is a bitch and a resourcehog on some systems

so my favorite fix is to set it to start type "manual"
and then start it with a batch like this - only if you really want to run VMs

net start vmauthdservice

personally I usually disable the service as I don't need it most of the times

I tried delayed start and my system works much better.  Event log is clean of errors on boot up.  There is no option on delayed start to delay for x seconds.

Thank you for your help.
