well I'M not sure wether you understand me correctly. It?s not about a standart vanilla-Kernel. My Kernel is patched with the Realtime patch from Kernel.org.

I know that its working with the vanilla 2.6.31 but i`m looking for a patch to get it working with the Realtime Kernel !

see my log ...

o.k. I've loked myself and found that funcion "filterIoctlSem" in /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/vmnet-only/filter.c could not be included so i searched for this function in the kernelsourcetree... but no includefile declares this function.

any help ?

@snowder, do you mind posting the hacked patch? I'm also unable to build the modules against 2.6.31-9-rt, it would be much apreciated - and save me a lot of hair pulling since I've been on this for 3 days...

well here you are ...

(the patch isn`t my work hornur to sombody else Smiley Happy , I just made the poor sript to use it with vmware 7 )

as root: copy the 2 files to /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source

execute the script: sh ./applypatch and then reconfigure vmware

thats all

btw. i had problems when starting vmplayer (vmware) as normal usr. As

root it works very well for me.

a workaround is to start vmplayer or vmware directly from

/usr/lib/vmware/bin/

Hi, snowder, thank you for posting.

I managed to solve it this morning, tho, by editing the

source files directly and changing the MUTEX definition for the

SEMAPHORE in each driver, following the 2.6.31 patch.

This is not over yet, there's no official support and I

couldn't find anything, nowhere within the communities there's a

prepared patch for the 2.6.31-rt kernel, so your posting it's all

there is till something else comes along.

*Anyone trying to use Vmware Player 3 or Vmware Workstation 7 on

Ubuntu Studio 9.10 or any 2.6.31 real time (rt) kernel, please follow

the instructions provided by snowder on the post above to get it

working.*

Kudos for you, dude.

I had given up on using VM ware with the realtime kernel, but this fixed the issue.

Attached is a patch that should work with both the -rt and standard flavors of the kernel, rather than hard-coding the assumption.

Use at your own risk.
