HI,
Have you installed vmware tools ?
if not install and try startx
Prakash
i have installed vmware tools using command line following this guide
but when i startx, get the same error...
i cannot do the step:
6. Log off of the root account.
exit (when i logged out, i have to login again to issue the startx command)
7. Start X and your graphical environment.
8. In an X terminal, launch the VMware Tools background application.
vmware-toolbox &
Note: You may run VMware Tools as root or as a normal user. To shrink virtual disks, you must run VMware Tools as root (su -).
when i run vmware-toolbox &
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display...
what should i do then?
Hi. You could try to install a Linux virtual appliance in stead. That way the linux box will be ready and installed and the GUI will be configured.
take a look at: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/1224
Also, there is a newer version of Workstation, 6.5.2.
Thread moved to Workstation forum.
What version of Workstation? I believe the latest of the 5.x product line is 5.5.9.
What did you specify as your Guest OS during the creation of the VM?
You shouldn't need to manually configure the X server... run the VMware Tools installation - part of the install should confiigure the X server appropriately for the VMware SVGA II video card your guest sees.
installation of X during initial setup should work - but you must NOT specify your notebooks VGA.
The VM has a VMware SVGA 2 card - not the one that is used by your host !!!

help...
Well, first I'd update to the latest Workstation 5.x build, to eliminate any potential issues which may have been resolved since your older build.
Make sure you follow the steps outlined in the Guest OS Installation Guide. The doc is quite specific with many step-by-step instructions.
i got this step by step installing RedHat Advanced Server 2.1 in vmware from http://www.vmware.com/support/esx2/guests/doc/guestos_redhatas21.html
i have tried it but still cannot start x window server..
or maybe it cannot run in VMware Workstation 5???
i got this line from the link:
*Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 Installation Guidelines
Support
*
*This guest operating system is supported on the following VMware products:
*
*VMware Workstation 4.0
*
*VMware ESX Server 2.0
