host os selection for best performance

hello

i have a computer that i intend to use only as host for vmware workstation

the computer resources if limited and i want to get the best performance possible from this box

if i could i would install ESX but since the hardware is not in the support matrix and the disk is IDE this option is not possible

does esx 2.5 support ide ? would it be the best selection ?

which os to choose for the host and how to configure it for best use (minimal performance impact from host os ) for vmware workstation ?

do i have to use X for vmware workstation

thank you

ESX 2.5 doesn't support IDE.

In order to run Workstation you must have X installed. But in order to run the Server you don't need any GUI: it runs on an minimal Linux installation; though you'll need an additional PC to run a console on it.
