host network becomes unavailable

Hi All,

New to the forum but not to VMware.  In a nutshell, the issue I'm having is that when I start a virtual PC (using workstation 7.1.6) the virtual PC can get out to the internet but the host PC looses it's network connectivity.  I have a Win 7 64 bit laptop with a Wired NIC connected to my corporate LAN and a USB NIC set to a static IP private LAN.  The VM is Win XP with two NICS, each bridged to one of the real NICs.   I ran the windows diagnostics when it's in this state and it comes back with

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource

(primary DNS server)

Detected

The device or resource is not responding to requests.

I've tried disabling the virtual NIC bridged to the corporate LAN but it still behaves the same.  Once I shut down the VM, it will recover and I'll get access back to the corporate lan after a few minutes.

I'm at a loss here...  it's very frustrating.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Jeff

Could you please post IP address detail in your host computer.

Please run this ipconfig/all   command in your host machine and post the output.

thanks abirhasan.  Keep in mind the ASIX AX88772 USB2.0 NIC is set to a static IP and not connected to the corporate LAN

As you are using bridge network that means your host and guest IP series willbe same like the IP addess you are getting the internet. But here i can see that you have one real IP and anothe is private IP which is not possible. Please make sure thar you hosr and guest got this 153.86.23.155 series IP.

If you wanna use private IP then you have to go for NAT.

Thanks

abirhasan,

thanks for your reply but I disagree with your response.  I resolved the problem, it tunes out that as a result of some changes by our IT group, the  configuation on the ASIX NIC had changed from a static IP to a DHCP based addres.  The VM that I run has a DHCP server service enabled and in a nutshell, they all get tangled together.  Once I reconfigured the ASIX NIC to a static IP, everything worked correctly.

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection POS:

   Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : ASIX AX88772 USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 68-7F-74-47-CD-2D
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.0.130(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

I now have 2 virtual NICS, each bridged to a real NIC and it works well.  NAT is not required for the private IP.

I sincerely do appreciate your willingness help on this...

Jeff
