game stuck in 256 colors / audio out of range

Hi, I recently purchased vmware workstation 8 even though i thought the price was steap i thoguth that it would be very easy and be able to preform well as advertised.

I wanted to play a game called Garrys Mod. It is under Windows XP and the host is Windows 7.

When I launch the game under the virtual machine the audio device will disconnect, it will give me the populer error that its out of ranger. But another problem is the game seams to be in either 16 bit or 256 colors. It is very bright / out of contrast as well. I have tried running the game in windows mode but it didnt work, also on windows xp i changed the color to 16 bit and back while the game was running, it seamed to of worked and the desktop was normal but then when i maximised the game again it was back in its state.

Please please help me, very much appreciations to anyone who contributes and helps solve this.

Heres the problem simplified:

  • I have Windows 7 64bit - High specs - 8 core - hd6970
  • Buy and install workstation 8
  • Install a windows xp vm with 1gb of rama and 2 cores
  • Installs steam and garrys mod (source game)

When the problem occurs

  • Runs garrys mod
  • Garrys mod is very bright and is in either 16 bit or in 256 colors.
  • Error message: ~Audio device ID cannot play because the source is out of range

More Info (optional/debugging)

  • the sound only breaks when the game is running, tried changing the audio options, the quility from high to low and the sound levels down
  • Its only the game window that is in the wrong colour mode, tried in-game options but there are none
  • the game runs pretty smooth at about 50+ framerate, no problems with lag or anything, its just this issue, i have the latest drivers on the host

This is it, please I am new to this software, I cant find the config, thought it could be the games config.
