changing Machine name (MAC)

Jump to solution

when we migrate any physical machine to workstation and create VM... we can not have two machine (one physical and its equivalent VM) active on network at same time...

where can we change this machine name? (MAC address).

what else we need to change so that we can run both machine at same time?

Thx...Ravindra

P.s. do not have access to system...just collecting info when need to execute vms

If it is a Windows PC, then the computer account's SID also must be changed. Use either NewSID or SysPrep... just like you would for a physical PC you installed a ghost image onto.

See here, info is for Workstation 4.5, but I guess it should work with newer ones too...

Thx for link....

so if MAC address is assign automatically when switched on... why does it complain for imported image... that machine with duplicate name is already in network system?

what makes VM in network unique? MAC and IP address?

if MAC and IP address assignment is automatic...so why error message?

Hmm, maybe also the PC name?

If you have two PCs/Virtual machines with the same computer name, I guess you will get the error you are getting.

See this screenshot

(the name is under "Full computer name")

It could also be the IP address - can you tell us the exact text of the error message you are getting?

If it is an IP address problem, assigning an IP manually should fix it.

How did you migrate the physical to virtual? What tool did you use?

I assume that this was a Windows physical machine?

If you used WS 6 import function, did you run the customization option to assign the new VM a new hostname, new network settings...etc

where can we change this machine name? (MAC

address).

what else we need to change so that we can run both

machine at same time?

yes, I used WS 6.0 import function.

I am not sure about customization option run... will check it.

What about when we clone a VM, can we change new host name, network setting etc so that both machine... original Vm and cloned one we can run at same time?
