cannot switch on framework 3.5 on windows 10 running in workstation 12

We have a Windows 10 host machine with Workstation 12.5.7 running on it. One of the virtual machines is also a Windows 10 machine.

In both the host and the virtual machine i need to switch on the "Windows feature" ".NET Framework 3.5..". This can be done in two ways: go to the Windows features and check the FW3.5 item, and secondly open a command window ("Windows Powershell (admin)") and enter a "dism" command.

In the host machine both methods work as expected, but in the vmware machine nothing happens at all! no installation, no messages, nothing. Just waiting and doing nothing. What am I missing and what is the solution here?

Is your guest connected to the internet?  Enabling .NET 3.5 may need to connect to Microsoft's web site, which I don't know for sure because I've not done it on Windows 10 in any way.
