XP Pro physical machine import fails

It fails early in the process, namely it can't install anything due, I suppose, to lack of write permissions or some such. The log is as follows.

Welcome to the Community,

can you verify user "bob" has local administrator permissions? Use the "Administrator" account instead of "bob". BTW you should also consider to use a newer version of the Converter.

Depending on OS you are using to run the Converter, try starting the Converter with "Run as Administrator".

Thanks for the ideas Andre.

I found that Microsoft Security Essentials on the XP machine had continuous monitoring turned on, so I turned it off.  Same problem.

I checked that Bob, the only user account, had administrator permissions.  Checked out ok.

I tried to run the conversion wizard as administrator. Same problem.

My host is Win 7 64bit. I started vmware workstation (7.1) running as administrator. Same problem.

I could not find a standalone version of the converter wizard on the host system, so I could not try running it separately as administrator.

Is there a specific program I could manually install on the XP machine to get around this problem?

Bob

Have a look at VMware vCenter Converter Standalone and for Windows XP I'd select Other versions of VMware vCenter Converter Standalone:  3.0 and choose VMware vCenter Converter 3.0.3 Starter Edition.

If VMware vCenter Converter Standalone does not work for you then give Paragon Go Virtual a try.

I had problems with the version you are using, sometimes it works but often fails with weird errors.

Suggest you use 4.3 it supports XP and is a MUCH better converter.

Also ensure that you cleaned out any remains of your failed attempts. I have seen ghos machine left behind from failed P2Vs.

When you do the convert ensure you are not convertinting any hidden partitions (diag ones), file system shares etc. Also ensure that the XP machine has similar speed nic as the server you are converting to. If they are not try creating a vswitch with a dedicated nic and hard set both nics to same speed. I seen that fail with pretty strange errors too.

if bob has admin rights, and you have space on the server you are convertitng to and you have done the above it should work.

Thanks to all of you. Installing the latest stand alone converter did the trick. I would not even have known that existed without all of your help.
