Workstation windows keyboard shortcuts not working (alt key)

Nearly all windows applications have a standard File, Edit, View menu that can be accessed via the ALT- key combination, for example ALT-F, ALT-E, ALT-V. However this does not work for me in VMware workstation. The menus are even underlined to indicate the key short cut.

I'm trying to use the mouse less and keyboard more, I also found that its impossible to navigate the GUI of Workstation like in other software. For example, i can jump around using the tab key in Windows Explorer, and select using arrow, space, etc. I cannot seem to use Workstation at all without a mouse.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to work around these problems?

This was reported by somebody else here earlier and VMware mentioned they would be looking into it.

Unfortunately I am not able to locate that post.
