Ubuntu 23.04 host (problem also appeared in 22.10)

Both fully updated
VMware Workstation Pro 16.2.(5?) and 17.0.2
Everything is fine until I move the mouse out of the guest desktop. Then on the host all window borders and decorations disappear and windows become unresponsive for about 5 seconds; then everything reappears (minus X extensions in the host's taskbar, and any MS Edge windows on the host.) If this happens three or four times, X crashes entirely (Dead PC icon appears, with a "log off" button".)
This started on 16.2 under Ubuntu 22.10. Since then I have upgraded both Ubuntu and VMware; no change. Any suggestions helpful; I use VMware daily but it's unusable at this point as I need to go in and out of machines quite often.
