Workstation Pro 16.2.0 build 18760230, unable to customise hardware when creating virtual machine

Hello All,

I have today upgraded by Workstation Pro installation to 16.2.0 build 18760230 on Windows 10 Enterprise x64 21H1 with all presented October 2021 patches installed. The upgrade process went well with two reboots.

I note however when creating my first new virtual machine I cannot customise the hardware as part of the creation process - when clicking the "Customize Hardware..." button a dialog box is presented with no content, simply the "Close" and "Help" buttons.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open VMware Workstation Pro
2. Click "File" menu, then "New Virtual Machine..."
3. Select "Custom (advanced)" radio button, click "Next"
4. Select hardware compatibility as "ESXi 7.0" with the "ESX Server" checkbox checked
5. Select "I will install the operating system later." radio button, click "Next"
6. Select "Microsoft Windows" radio button and "Windows 10 and later x64" from the Version list box, click "Next"
7. Name the machine "Windows 11 x64 21H2" and retain the recommended path, click "Next"
8.Select "UEFI" radio button, check the "Secure Boot" checkbox
9. Change "Number of processors" to 1 and "Number of cores per processor" to 2, click "Next"
10. Set "Memory for this virtual machine" value to 8192, click "Next"
11. Select "Use network address translation (NAT)" radio button, click "Next"
12. Select "Paravirtualized SCSI" radio button, click "Next"
13. Select "SCSI" radio button, click "Next"
14. Select "Create a new virtual disk" radio button, click "Next"
15. Set "maximum disk size (GB)" value to 60.0, clear "Allocate all disk space now" checkbox, select "Split virtual disk into multiple files" radio button, click "Next"
16. Accept the default virtual disk name value, click "Next"
17. Click "Customize Hardware..." button to display empty dialog box

If I instead click the "Finish" button I'm then able to successfully open the VM settings for editing.

Could anyone else verify? Hopefully I'm lonely, else VMware could address in the next point release.

Justin

Absolutely the same problem. No matter what did you choose before. I've tried all typical config. So, now, the only way to customize hardware is only after VM is created, go to "Edit virtual machine settings". Bug?

Confirm same on setting up new vm. Can still be done via edit virtual machine, however the customize hardware window is totally empty on new setup.

Hi,

VMware knows...
I reported this before they even had the release notes up and the Product Manager's reaction was this:

You can change these settings after the VM is created.

Finally, it's fixed. 16.2.1

Confirmed back the way it was - that's two small QoL changes I didn't realise I was missing!

The other change I noted was the VM hardware compatibility level name change to "Workstation 16.2.x" from the previous 'beta' label. I still need to find out precisely what's in this new version though.

I think you summed it up nicely already
