Workstation Pro 12 will not autofit 32-bit Vista guest when host window resizes

I'm using Workstation Pro 12 on 64-bit Windows 7.

I had a Vista 32-bit VM runing on Workstation 11, which I had set to resize the guest automatically to fit the VMware host window.

I upgraded to Workstation Pro 12, opened the VM and upgraded for Workstation 12 compatibility. I started it up, and everything was fine, with the guest resizing as before to match the host window.

Next, I updated VMware Tools. And now, if I resize the VMware host window, the Vista guest sounds the USB connect/disconnect bongs, and after a few seconds the host window snaps back to its previous size.

This is the only 32-bit VM that I have, but with 64-bit Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 VMs the version 12 VMware Tools work fine, and guest autofit works exactly as it did before.

Any workround (other than not upgrading VMWare Tools)?

Thanks

Alan

Same thing happened to me (32-bit Vista). Same guest machine worked fine with Workstation 8 but upgrading to 12 Pro hardware caused the AutoFit to stop working for that particular machine. Windows 10 and Windows 8 VMs work fine.

Interestingly, I found that disabling 3D Hardware Acceleration (under VM Display settings) solved the problem for me -- which is something I needed to do to solve another problem I was having. Not sure if you need the 3D accelerated improvements or not, but it may be worth a shot.

That seems to do the trick!

I don't care about hardware acceleration here, fortunately.

Many thanks

I too am having this issue, only with Windows Vista x64 though - all my other x64 VM's are autosizing.

Seems like the stability of my VM has also gone downhill Smiley Sad

I found if we use the vmware tools 11 in the vmware 12, everything is so far so good. I guess it's due to a problem with the VMware 12. They may removed something which is critical to Vista. I tried a fresh install under Vmware 12 and the problem is still there. Here's What I did to change the vmware tool back to version 11 to successfully make everything work:

1. Uninstall the VMware tools 12 in the vm;

2. Change the compatibility setting for the vista vm back to version 11 if you upgraded earlier;

3. Uninstall VMware 12;

4. Install the vm11 back;

5. Install VMware tools 11;

6. Shut down everything;

7. Upgrade to VMware 12;

8. Upgrade hardware settings to VMware 12;

9. Enjoy your day!

Except the annoying notification to remind you to upgrade the VMware tools, everything is sound and smooth now. Every time when there is an update to VMware 12, I simple make a snapshot and then upgrade the VMware tools to see if the fixed the problem, but till now nothing changed. Just a way to keep using the VMware 12 with the least compromise with our Vista.
