I'd been defragging my VM using Auslogic so far and was quite happy with the performance. Recently I tried defragging using VMware workstation built-in tool and the VM now seems very slow. Was wondering what have been the experience of other people regarding which Defrag tool to use.
Of course, I defrag (after deleting all snapshots) and create snapshot after defragging the VM.
The above I assume defrags the guest VM.
For host - should I use Auslogic or just leave my VM partition as is?
The VMware Workstation built-in tool does not really defrag your guests. It tries to save your sparse or thin vDISK en bloc. If your guests are saved on a SSD, this would be double useless. Firstly, every SSD uses "wear leveling" and secondly each write access lowers the SSD lifetime.
Why did you use snapshots? They are no backup and decrease the performance of a vDISK.
Forgetting snapshots for a moment, what is the best way to defrag a VM.
(1) Defrag on Host Win-7 64-bit using Auslogic
(2) Defrag on VM Win-7 32-bit using Auslogic
(3) Defrag using VM Workstation in-built Defrag Tool
Which ones and in which order should one proceed?
Thanks,
the above link suggests that defrag should be done in following order
defrag inside VM
use VM built-in defrag tool to defrag then compact
defrag host
