Workstation 8 Set Network Location asks every time started

Hello,

I get the Windows 7 "Set Network Location" dialog each time I start a particular VM.

The Network ID increases each time I start up the VM. It is up to number 57 now!

Searched around and cannot seem to find a reason for this.

Any pointers on why it does not remember the settings and how to resolve?

Thanks

Simon

How is the Host connected to the LAN, Ethernet or Wi-Fi?

What type of Router in used on the LAN?

How is the Guest's Network Adapter configured, Bridged, NAT, Host-Only or LAN Segment?

In Windows 7 what type of Network are you selecting, Home, Work or Public?

In Windows 7 is the Network Adapter configured for DHCP or have you set a Static IP Address?

If DHCP, have you tried setting a Static IP Address?

Hi Woodyz

How is the Host connected to the LAN, Ethernet or Wi-Fi?

- Wi-fi, this is in my home office or the actual works office. Also same on LAN connection though.

What type of Router in used on the LAN?

- Home router is the BT homehub3, office, no idea.

How is the Guest's Network Adapter configured, Bridged, NAT, Host-Only or LAN Segment?

- I have 2 adapters, the NAT (no problem in this one) and another on Host-Only (VMNet1) which increments by one each startup.

- For this Host-Only I have configured a static ip address 192.168.110.100 on the IPv settings inside the guest

- On the VM Virtual Network Editor I have ticked "Use Local DHCP service..." and set the subnet IP: to 192.168.110.0 and set subnet mask: to 255.255.255.0

- On the DHCP Settings dialog I have;

Start IP address: 192.168.110.128

End IP Address: 192.168.110.254

In Windows 7 what type of Network are you selecting, Home, Work or Public?

- It offers all, but I am selecting Work each time so I can see the network

In Windows 7 is the Network Adapter configured for DHCP or have you set a Static IP Address?

- The host (my laptop) is DHCP

If DHCP, have you tried setting a Static IP Address?

- Cannot do this on work laptop. DCHP to my wi-fi, then Cisco AnyConnect to work VPN.

Although same problem if I do or do not connect to work VPN.

I have other VMs though that never ask for the network location on restarts on the same Laptop and also using Host-Only adapter with a static IP address to allow me to run services for test systems to known addresses.

Hope answers above help

Simon

Just to be clear, what OS is on the Host and the Guest that's have an issue are both Windows 7?

Also when I mentioned setting a static IP Address I was referring to the Guest and I see no reason why you can't test with a static IP Address on the Guest.

Hi WoodyZ

Both OS are Win 7 x64

The Guest is set to Static, the 192.168.110.100 number, deliberately so I run software on that which needs a static IP

The VM network is set to provide DHCP range as well

Thanks

I assumed you set a static IP Address on the NAT Network Adapter in the Guest however what about the Host-Only Network Adapter, isn't that the one you're having the issue with, have you tried setting it to a static IP Address too?

No static on the NAT. The Static IP is on the Host-Only adapter. The Host only adapter is the one with the problem

Sorry, I've been focused on something else this morning and have only skimmed what you've written and thus missed the answers to my own questions! Smiley Wink  Anyway the first thing I do is clean up the redundant Network Locations using Merge and delete network locations and then set its name without a number.  See if this doesn't stop the madness.

Hi

I did the Merge and Delete on the network locations and changed name but no joy Smiley Sad. Next restart asked to Set Network Location again and the network name had a suffix of 1, which increased to 2 on the next reboot.

Regards

Simon

Since this is not happening with other Virtual Machines you have then I do not necessarily see this as a VMware issue per se, while not saying absolutely it isn't, nonetheless I think it's time to look to Microsoft and or Microsoft resources to fix what is in all likelihood a Windows issue irrelevant of the fact that it's running in a Virtual Machine.
