Workstation 7.1 doesn't work on XenServer Virtual Machine

Hi,

today I wanted to try the new Workstation 7.1.3 but I can't install it on my virtual machine windows 7 which I run on Citrix XenServer.

When I try to install it .. I get this error:

VMware-workstation-full-7.1.3-324285

Error: This product can only be installed on Windows XP or later.

Windows 95, 98, ME, NT and 2000 are not supported.

Any idea on how to solve this issue ??

I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit on Citrix XenServer 5.5

on an Intel Q6600 Quad core with assigned all 4 cores and 4GB RAM

sounds like the same message you get when trying to install Workstation on a host that also runs HyperV

I doubt that it will work - best you wait for a reply from jmattson - he knows this stuff better then anybody else.

If you are a hardcore user you could install Workstation manually - but as already mentioned it will very likely crash anyway as soon as you then try to start the first VM - or maybe even at boot time when vmx86.sys is enabled to start at boot.

If you are seriously interested in trying this ... I wrote a script to manually install WS 7.0 in a few seconds - this would very likely make the setup possible.

You can find that script somewhere here: http://sanbarrow.com/phpBB2/

sorry - I forgot the link and would have to search it too

edit: found it

http://sanbarrow.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1711

it would need some modifications to work on a windows 7

Thank you very much Continuum .. I think that this must be a BUG or an unsupported feature.

I'll give it a try this weekend .. meanwhile .. hope that the guy you mentioned shows up with some more info on this issue.

Thanks Again ! Smiley Wink

a bug ?? - preventing the user from doing something that will not work anyway ?

The installer reports the wrong error message when it detects that it's being executed inside a Hyper-V virtual machine. It does sound like that detection mechanism is also kicking in when the installer is executed inside a XenServer virtual machine, though I'm not sure why. If you can configure your XenServer virtual machine not to set bit 31 of CPUID[1].ecx, you might be able to work around this restriction.

I don't know whether or not it is possible to run VMware Workstation under XenServer, but if it is, you would only be able to run 32-bit nested guests using binary translation, since XenServer does not (to the best of my knowledge) yet virtualize VT-x or AMD-V. Nested virtual machines are also likely to be quite slow.

Why do you want to nest virtual machines in this way?

Hi,

I'm running my win7 desktop on a thin client in a virtualized environment (xenserver) and I wanted to try the workstation.

That's it Smiley Wink

Thanx for your comment.. I'll try to figure out how to do it and I'll let you know where the problem actually was.

(I'm actually expecting that the VM will be slow .. but it's just for testing purposes)
