Workstation 7.1.3 suddenly won't start - kernel 2.6.36.1

Hi folks,

Been running Workstation on ubuntu linux for quite a while now, following both kernel and vmware updates over the course of time. I updated to 7.1.3 when it was released - against kernel 2.6.35.7 - all good there, however two days ago something popped, workstation crashed during the middle of the day with no error message, and refused to restart - a situation a good reboot and cup of tea didn't resolve.

When starting from the cli, you see the various modules info and then the cli prompt reappears without the vmware gui starting, as follows..

root@uxps13:/tmp/vmware-root# vmware

if I checkout the log file, you only get the following info:

Dec 01 12:32:25.327: app-140337018435328| Log for VMware Workstation pid=14234 version=7.1.3 build=build-324285 option=Release

In the course of trying to resolve it, I've downgraded back two revisions of workstation with the same result, and upgraded to kernel 2.6.36.1, all on the off-chance I might get a little more info to troubleshoot this one.

Also confirmed via the package manager that no updates / upgrades have been made in the last 4 days that I can reverse to try and pin the issue down.

The only other message that I can find, is this one in the syslog:

http:// 5981.007860 vmware-tray[14275]: segfault at 0 ip 00007fe874ef88a0 sp 00007fffff485b98 error 4 in libgdkmm-2.4.so.1.1.0[7fe874ec600048000]+

it doesn't happen every time you try and run vmware - seems almost random.. There are only two copies of libgdkmm-2.4 on the system, one in the vmware directory, and the other in /usr/lib - out of desperation I tried copying the vmware one over to see if that got me any further - but no luck.

Is there any way to get some more verbose logging out of workstation during startup to try and pin this down ?

It's a bit of a curly one - appreciate any advice you might have,

Scott.

Workstation 7.1.3 requires a patch to run with 2.6.36 and 2.6.37. See the forum discussions for the patches.

Thanks Noel, appreciate your time.

I had installed the correct patch - the startup text listing the modules would show it failing to find any modules compiled for the current kernel if I had not. If I delete the compiled modules - and re-run vmware, the first thing it does is run through and recompile them (happily) - and then workstation dumps as per my note above.

It's clearly something do do with my system, rather than a vmware bug as such - just at a bit of a loss as to where to get some more debug info out of vmware as it dumps to help me narrow down the problem.

Thanks again for your help,

Cheers,

Scott.

Quick update - vmware started working again today - coincidentally, my chosen icon set had changed after an update.... I switched the icons back and vmware failed again.

Appears it's something to do with the window manager starting up the vmware tray icon - perhaps it chokes on that font set when selecting an icon.... using a particular icon set (DivergenceIII) causes this error :

vmware-tray[19997]: segfault at 0 ip 00007ff20079e8a0 sp 00007fffe9f65e98 error 4 in libgdkmm-2.4.so.1.1.0[7ff20076c00048000+

Peculiar.
