Workstation 6.5 Export problem

Workstation 6.5 build 118166

Host OS: Vista SP1 64-bit

Guest OS: OpenSolaris 64-bit

I'm trying to export this virtual machine to be able to import it into ESXi, but File -> Export process keeps failing durign retrieval of the source virtual machine with this message:

"The application encountered an unexpected error connecting to the vstor service. Reboot your machine or restart the vstor service"

Of course, I have tried rebooting. I checked the Windows service list but I do not see any instance of a 'vstor' or 'VMWare vstor' service. The other VMWare services seem to be up and running just fine.

The vmware-client log file contains this text at the end; notice the 'Task failed: P2VError VSTOR2_NOT_RUNNING()' message 5 lines form the bottom:

OK - answering my own question.

I got it going with a 2 step workaround:

1. Convert VMX virtual machine to OVF format using ovfTool.exe

2. Import OVF format machine into ESXi 3.5u3 using free edition of VMWare Converter

I'd like to be able to script this operation, but this manual process works for now.
