(Workstation 5.5) Snapshot migration?

Guys, I need to migrate a snapshot from one physical machine to another, and wanted to verify the steps neccessary.

(Given)

MachineA - with baseVM and a single snapshot created on it; and

MachineB - with baseVM

(I'm thinking)

  • copy the snapshot-specific (Snapshot1.vmem and Snapshot1.vmsd) files over to the baseVM directory on MachineB

  • copy the snapshot definition (.vmsd) file over to the baseVM directory on MachineB.

  • launch the VM on MachineB.

Will this work?

No this will not work due to the following reasons:

- a snapshot only contains the changes to the disk since the snapshot was created - not the complete disk

- VMware virtual disks contain a CID chain, if you simply copy the file to another VM the VM won't start

It might work if the second VM has exactly the same base disk - but then you could simply copy the whole VM
