Workstation 12 Pro UI crashes leaving VMs running but with lock files

This is not a fatal problem but it is really annoying.

Running VMware Workstation 12.1.1 Pro on Windows 10 pro version 1511

What's maddening is that I just purchased this upgrade February 1, 2016, but I am not allowed to file a support ticket online.

This first happened with Workstation 10 on this system but has recently returned.
If I leave the GUI running for too long - like over night - I see a crash the next day.

After clicking OK, the GUI is gone but the VMs are still running just fine.

If I find and delete all the .lck files in the VM's location on disk, I can open the GUI again to view the console of any running system.

You would think the specificity of this error would make it easy for a developer to find!

Here is the version information from the About dialog:20160503-Workstation12-About-Dialog-redacted.png

Thanks for reporting this issue. We are aware of this issue and are currently working on it.

Will you please try the workaround at the bottom of this thread:

Vmware Workstation Pro 12 Crashing On Windows 10

and see if it works for you?

Hi lcbrevard2012,

Thank you very much for using Workstation. Could you please let us know if this workaround(adding 'C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation' to defender exclusion list) works?
