Workstation 10/11 & vSphere client disconnects external USB drive

Hi,

I wondering if anyone could help with this.

I am running Windows 7 x64 SP1 and have Workstation 11 installed. I am running all of my guests from an external USB 3.0 hard.
As my work VMware environment is vCenter 5.1 I also have the vSphere 5.1 client (latest version)  installed plus vSphere client 5.5 for access to some test ESXi hosts.

My issue occurs when I am running Workstation (with active guests) and I have the vSphere 5.1 client open and start a remote console from here. At this point my external drive then disconnects & re-connects and basically mucks up my Workstation guest. This issue occurred with when I had Workstation 10 installed as well.

I have raised a support ticket with VMware who are currently suggesting that the 5.1 client is incompatible with Workstation 11 which seems a little strange as nowhere in the release documentation does it state this.

Does anyone have any experience or explanation as to why the older vSphere client would cause this?

Many thanks in advance,

Mark
