Wireless doesn't work in clone

I have a working VM on my internal hard drive that I wanted to put onto my external hd. So I cloned it, and it seems to be working for the most part, Windows will start. However, upon going to Network Connections, it does not show anything for wireless. I don't understand why it isn't there, because it is on the vm I cloned it from. I can't figure out how to tell it to use my main computer's wireless card.

Windows XP Pro on both vms and main computer.

Additionally, when I look at the Ethernet settings, both vms have the same thing (NAT).

If all you wanted was to move the VM to your external drive, why didn't you just copy/move the folder there?

That's what I tried at first, but it didn't work. I had various errors, and finally gave up on moving the files and decided to try cloning. Is this not the purpose of cloning? I've already cloned it, so what's the best way to fix the wireless at this point?

Kmarie,

First off, welcome to the VMware Forums Smiley Happy

Your 2 virtual machines may not show a wireless network. By default, the hardware presented to the guest operating system is a Physical wired NIC. Workstation is setup to have the guests act like they are on a wired network to the host physical computer, and then the physical computer redirects the traffic out onto the network.

When you cloned the virtual machine, what options did you select? Also, is your wireless a USB device or physical card in your host?

Also, in the virtual machine that does not work, can you run IPConfig from a command prompt? I would like to see if there are any errors in the guest getting an address.

I selected NAT as the networking option... I don't remember what the other questions were.

I've attached a screen shot of ipconfig.

Physical wireless card in my computer.

Actually, my original vm doesn't have wireless now either. It was fine this morning, so I suspect something happened when I was copies files back and forther earlier today, getting all those errors.

So the new question is, how do I make BOTH my vm's see my computer's wireless card?

Short answer: you cannot. Unless you attach a USB wireless NIC directly into your guest, your guest will ALWAYS see a wired NIC. Either use NAT, or if you want bridged mode, run the Virtual Network Editor to disable automatic bridging, and specify your host's wireless NIC to be mapped to the switch VMnet0.

You say, "Either use NAT, or"

But I AM using NAT. ?

Either use NAT, or if you want bridged mode

Bridged (aka VMnet0) = virtual machines are just like every other computer on the network

NAT (aka VMnet8) = Goes through your hosts network address to get to the outside world.

If you set your virtual machines to use "Bridged" mode when editing settings, you may need to force Workstation to use your wireless network card. I do that with my laptop at work sometimes.

Workstation's Edit Menu > Virtual Network Editor > Host Virtual Network Mapping Tab

Set VMnet0 to point to your wireless network card. that should work fine for you ... see the attached picture for reference.

Still can't get wireless to work. I've attached some screen shots to let you guys see what I'm seeing.

I've tried:

1) Going to Edit -> Virtual Network Settings -> Host Virtual Network Mapping

2) Setting VMnet0 to the Broadcom option (second one in the list)

3) Changing the ethernet settings for my vm to Bridged

WIRELESS DOESN'T WORK

I've tried

1) Going to Edit -> Virtual Network Settings -> Host Virtual Network Mapping

2) Setting VMnet0 to the Dell Wireless option (third one in the list)

3) Changing the ethernet settings for my vm to Bridged

WIRELESS DOESN'T WORK

I've tried

1) Changing the ethernet settings for my vm to NAT

WIRELESS DOESN'T WORK

I've tried

1) Changing the ethernet settings for my vm to Custom: VMnet0 (default bridged)

WIRELESS DOESN'T WORK

UPDATE

It works now. After about 30 minutes I tried my vm again and it now its connecting to the internet through NAT. I'm not sure why it didn't work right after I changed the settings, perhaps I need to restart VMware for the changes to take effect? I also was fooling around with the .vmx file on one my other vm's, perhaps that contributed as well.

Thanks

Kmarie,

If you modify the VMX file of a virtual machine, the changes will not take affect until the virtual machine is shut down and then restarted.

changes between nat/bridged will occur immediately, but the guest may require a release/renew of the IP Address.

I'm happy to know that it's working for you now.
