FWIW I still cannot get my WFWG3.11 VMs to work on VMWare 6 (release version) on Vista Ultimate 64-bit. However,

a. before the release version I couldn't get them to work on WinXP either, but on WinXP with VMWare 5.5 everything worked fine.

b. the people at VMWare clearly are not experiencing this problem.

I have successfully created a WFWG3.11 VM that works fine under MS Virtual PC v7 on Vista Ultimate 64-bit, but when I tried to use the VMWare converter to convert that VM to VMWare format (to see if /that/ VM would work in VMWare), the process failed. I think the converter may only work with earlier versions of Virtual PC. But in any case, the virtual hardware in the MS product is sufficiently different that a VM created with the MS product would probably not work well, if at all, in VMWare.

I tried to think about what might be different about /my/ systems, and because the WInXP system is really ordinary, the only likely difference seems to me to be that my /host/ machines are both running as workstations in a Windows 2003 server domain. Since it's quite likely that VMWare is not testing in that specific environment, maybe that's the problem - I wonder if your hosts are also in a Win2003 domain (and perhaps more importantly, whether they have security constraints imposed by the domain, or whether the script that runs during domain logon is significant.

I haven't got back to VMWare on this one yet, primarily because I have no new information. But maybe we can compare notes.

i am totally convinced that the failure to run WfW in workstation 6.0 is because of a bug in 6.0.I think it does not matter what os the host is running.I tried a fresh install of WfW3.11 with dos 6.22 from scratch. The installation went fine (mouse + keyboard were working during installation) but when i booted, after the installation was finished, i had the same problem (No keyboard , No mouse).

It's due to a change in the keyboard handling. This came up during the v6 beta. I guess it hasn't been resolved.

I'm also having this issue. Any progress on a workstation 6 update to resolve this 'bug' ?

Same problem. I am also unable to make windows 3.11 work under VMware

Workstation 6. After the instalation and first boot, the mouse and keyboard simply freeze up.

Hi,

I have tested two host OS (Windows 2000 Prof. and Windows XP Prof.). Changing from VMware WS 5.5 to 6.0 the WfW311-Client was freezing the mouse and the keyboard after booting...

Same problem here. A VM that used to work stopped. Not only does the keyboard and mouse not work, the CPU gets pegged on the host.

I tried reinstalling, upgrading, downgrading, installing from scratch, and even copying the VM to a Mac running Fusion with no luck.

The installation of WFW works fine, but after the first reboot then Windows is no longer usable.

Same problem again. Are these guys from VMWare aware of that? Do they provide a bugfix?

As I said two posts above yours: yes.

We've identified the issue and are investigating fixes.

Is there a forecast for a solution? I need to test an old application. The decision to buy 10 licenses awaits.

Unfortunately, I can't comment on release dates.

In the interim, you might wish to use Workstation 5.5.4.

I am a huge VMware fan, and am awaiting a fix for this issue so I can do occasional tinkering, but VirtualPC does work withWin3.x (as well as OS/2) a bit better. For serious testing of that OS it is worth considering both virtualization products which can co-exist on the same host machine. Assuming a Windows host.

I'll still pay for VMware for the functionality any day over what VirtualPC has to offer.

Thanks for suggestion.

But I need VMs to run Win3.11, Win98, WinXP and Ubuntu.

I already use VirtualPC and it lacks a lot of features, specially for Linux.

Does Workstation 5.5.4 run on Windows Vista as host?

I agree completely. I was suggesting you only use VirtualPC for Win3.x and to run the other OSes that have VMware tools within VMware.

VMware and VirtualPC can run simultaneously without conflicts.

To answer your other question, Vista will run in Wks 5.5, it just isn't supported.

Windows for Workgroups 3.1 works fine and so does regular Windows 3.11 (including Enhanced mode), but just not WFW 3.11.

Can we try changing the keyboard driver, maybe?

Does anyone have WFW 3.11 working?

Thanks

W3.1 fine, WfW cursor freeze, here too under WS6.0.

While we're waiting for a fix ...

1. I've tried a patch to an svga driver which ups the resolution on W3.1 to 1024x768. However on QEMU I can use a Cirrus driver which increases this to 1280x1024@65K (QEMU emulates a Cirrus graphics card). What's the best folks have achieved here with VMWare? (And "how"!)

2. Can't get sound working at all for W3.1 under VMWare. Instructions to add the line Sound.VirtualDev="sb16" simply crash WS. Again no problem getting sound in QEMU. No doubt I'm missing something easy Smiley Sad

3. Any suggestions for getting networking and browsing working under W3.1? That'll keep me occupied until WfW is fixed Smiley Wink

Thanks.
