A couple of us have noticed that a Windows XP or Vista 32-bit VM will run extremely slow when Firefox 3 is running on the Linux host. We noticed this both with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, Ubuntu 8.04, and Ubuntu 8.10. Interestingly, this problem does not occur when Firefox 2 is running on the Linux host. I suspect that this is some kernel issue that both the VMware folks and Mozilla folks should look at.
