I have installed Internet Explorer 5.5 on my Windows 95 virtual machine. But the problem is, when I boot up Windows 95, it will never boot up again and the only thing I see is "Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer." Can someone please help me find the solution for this? I'm using Windows 95 OSR 2.
Hi Tyler, what version of Workstation are you running because there is limited support for Windows 95.
Please see page 107 of https://partnerweb.vmware.com/comp_guide2/pdf/VMware_GOS_Compatibility_Guide.pdf
Workstation9.0, 8.0, 7.1.4, 7.1.3, 7.1.2, 7.1.1, 7.1, 7.0.1, 7.0, 6.5.3, 6.5.2, 6.5.1, 6.5, 6.0.5, 6.0.4, 6.0.3, 6.0.2, 6.0.1, 6.0
I am using Workstation 12. Do I have to downgrade.
It's hard to recover if the VM won't even boot anymore as the OS files within it might be trashed due to the IE 5.5. The best way is if you have a full backup or snapshot of the VM prior to the IE 5.5 install, and recover from either.
If you could also attach the recent vmware.log files, so that the details of both host and guest VM can be seen. Perhaps a masking of the CPUID and its capabilities to the Windows 95 VM might help (although this a longshot); the vmware.log will make it easier to suggest the possible masking. This is because Windows 95 may not work well on Pentium 4 processor family and later.
I think I want to see the video tutorial for this because I felt confused.
So I have changed RAM for my Windows 95 virtual machine from 256MB to 128MB, and for some strange reason, Windows 95 has started working again. Too much ram is the reason why Windows 95 doesn't boot up after Internet Explorer 5.5 has installed.
