I have VMware Workstation 7.1 (latest) installed on Windows 7 x64 host with a Windows 2003 x64 virtual machine. I cannot ping and therefore reach my VM from the host. I've tried NAT as well as bridged. I've tried the article on ICS as well as just about everything I can find and still no luck.
Any help will be appreciated.

I also tried the various network settings applicable to the topic like turn TCP Chimney off.
Disable IPv6 on the host adapter.
Check if the bridge protocol is enabled in your host connection.
If possible with Windows 7 set it from "public" to "private":
To change a network location type
1. Open Network and Sharing Center by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Network and Internet, and then clicking Network and Sharing Center.
2. Click Customize, and then click either Public (for "Public place" networks) or Private (for "Home" or "Work" networks). Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.Click Next, and then click Close.
Disable all firewalls while testing (host and guest). Be aware that some virus protection suites also contain firewalls (Trend Micro for example).

I appreciate the steps listed. However my host can't still can't connect with my VM.
I disabled IPv6, turned off firewals and anything else that might purposefully be blocking traffic. These steps were easy.
I had already followed the suggestion in the knowledge base article. Unfortunately the article isn't well written. It doesn't give a reason why those things need to be disabled or how the machine will behave with the changes. Also, it wasn't clear if making the changes in the host and virtual machine was necessary. Lastly, the changes in the article don't exactly match the options in both the virtual machine and the host.
I also made the changes in the network settings from public to private. This wasn't as easy because I didn't have the customize button as mention. I read some other posts elsewhere that helped. However, I'm not sure I made these changes correctly. Could the disparity in network settings be a cause?
Also, it wasn't clear if making the changes in the host and virtual machine was necessary.
No? IMHO it is clear:
"To restore network connectivity, disable IPv4 Checksum offloading in the Advanced Properties of the affected hosts and virtual machines."
Do you try to ping by name or IP address?

I try to ping by IP address.
Still can't ping or connect between my host and VM. I've followed all of the steps provided and no luck. I've also tested this VM on a Windows Vista host and it worked fine. I suspect there's some obvious setting in Windows 7 that we're missing.
I did change the network type from public to work, but it changes back to public on reboot.
Any ideas?
Try to disable TCP Offload on the host: "netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled"
That caused such problems under Windows XP very often. In Windows 7 it should be set to automatic by default.

I had already turned off that setting.
I was able to permanently set the VMware networks to private via the secpol.msc settings. Still no ping though.
Looks like one simple thing fixed this:
C:\Users\mullion>netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable
Note that this came back:
"IMPORTANT: Command executed successfully.
However, "netsh firewall" is deprecated;
use "netsh advfirewall firewall" instead.
For more information on using "netsh advfirewall firewall" commands
instead of "netsh firewall", see KB article 947709
at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=121488 .
Ok."
Unfortunately I tried so many things that I'm not sure that this is the only thing.
If you have the time, revert each setting and try it out again until it stops working again.

Worked perfectly for me, many thanks!
It took me a long time to find the solution...
