I have Windows XP professional on my laptop and Windows 2000 professional on my desktop. I need to run windows 2000 as VM on my laptop. I downloaded VMware workstation product and when I tried to install on Windows 2000 desktop, it gives me an error saying that it needs new installer. I am not sure what this error is. I am assuming that I need to install vmware-workstation on my desktop to create the virtual machine. Once I create the virtual machine, I assume that I can run it on my laptop. Am I doing anything wrong?.

No, the guest operating system is independent from the host operating system. You can install W2K on whatever host OS you have running. So there's something else going wrong....
...but...
...you can use the build-in VMware Converter tool to import your desktop into VMware Workstation. Just use the "File > Import or Export" function. The desktop will not be modified, just read from to create the guest.

Hi,
there is no reason why win 2000 would not install if the host is running XP.
Where are you getting the error(installing workstation or installing win 2000 in workstation) and what exactly is the error?
Joe
I think I am not getting the basics right ... Can you point me to a manual that guides me who to create a VM from the start?.
Tried the VMWare Workstation manual already? Creating a new virtual machine: http://pubs.vmware.com/ws6_ace2/ws/newguest_ws.html
In general you set up a hardware "container", the virtual guest, by using "File > New > Virtual Machine". You assigng virtual CPU's, memory, network cards, CD-ROM and disks. Then you start this virtual machine and then setup is the same as on real harwdare. You insert the installation media (the Windows 2000 product CD or an ISO file) and run through the setup. The last action after the guest OS is running is to install the VMWare Tools.

What concerns the "error saying that it needs new installer" :
I think the problem may be that on your Win2000 desktop machine there is still an old Windows' installer program.
This was a common error at some time ago, especially in Windows 2000, because some years ago Microsoft has introduced new API for installers, which was incompatible with older ones.
To correct this: go to Microsoft website and search for "Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable"
(KB893803, see also http://support.microsoft.com/?id=893803)
then download and install it on Windows 2000 desktop machine (restart may be required).
It should allow you to install VMware Workstation environment on your Windows 2000 desktop.
And as "AWo" said above, you can install W2K virtual machine on whatever host OS you have running.
So you can directly install VM-W2K on your laptop as well.
Yep, I think doing a "Windows Update" with the Internet Explorer will give you a new Installer.
