Windows 10 VM's intermittently freezing in Workstation 16 Pro on Linux

Hi

I am suffering severe performance problems when running Windows 10 VM's on Workstation 16.2.1 Pro running on Ubuntu 20.04.

Every few minutes, the VM freezes, and remains frozen for about half a minute or longer.

In that state, everything including Task Manager is frozen.

In the Windows 10 VM, there are no programs running.

In the Windows 10 VM, there are no Windows Updates pending, and the VM has been rebooted.

The same problem happens with several different Windows 10 VM's

There is no problem with Linux VM's (e.g. Fedora LInux 37).

On the host OS (Ubuntu Linux 20.04), while the Windows 10 VM is frozen, I can see several vmware processes spiking up to 100% CPU load. There is plentiful of free RAM, and disk I/O is almost idle.

On the host OS, there are no other programs running except VMware Workstation.

On the host OS, there are no system updates pending, and the host OS has been rebooted.

Host Hardware:

ThinkPad P1 Gen 2

  • Intel® Core™ i7-9750H CPU @ 2.60GHz × 12
  • 32GB RAM
  • 2x 1TB Nvme SSD
