The Ryzen CPU series is relatively new and isn't officially compatible with any VMware products at this time. It is also proving to be highly problematic with many of them, including Workstation. Keep this in mind when comparing its performance to supported CPUs.
EDIT: According to the release notes for Workstation 14, Ryzen may be supported with hardware version 14 (ESXi does not support Ryzen). Have you tried making sure your VM is at the highest level?
