Why the virtual DHCP server does not work?

Hi,

I have used the workstation to create a virutal machine with NAT connection. The virtual machine works well in my computer with wifi connection, and it can obtain an IP address from virtual DHCP server successfully. Then I copied it into another computer without any network connnection (no wifi, no cable plugging). After starting, the virtual machine can not obtain an IP address from the DHCP server. In my opinion, whether it has a physical network connection or not, the DHCP server should work anywhere. I wonder  why the server can not work well.

By the way, is there any document to introduce the inner of vmware network. Thanks!

Yes, NAT is the network setting which can allow you to generate ip which is pre defined in Virtual Network editor. and your vm will also communicate to outside network .

Instead if you change it to Host Only. The vm will get the ip range but they will communicate inside your host not outside world. so no internet connectivity then. (No network connectivity require in this case)

Hi,

You can configure the virtual machine network adapter in Host only mode (VM > Settings > Network adapter > Change it to host only)

This will help you communicate between host and VM without any connection on host machine.

Thanks,

Thanks for you reply. Additionally, I think with NAT it is reasonable to make DHCP server work without physical network connection. I don't understand the rationale behind the current design.
