Why the network communication issues between HOST and VM?

I have a VM configured for bridged under its networking and it will grab an IP address.  Other machines on the network can ping it by name and it can ping other machines by name.  There is always a problem with the host though!  It can't ping the host or be pinged by the host.  If I shut it down and start it up on another machine, it is able to ping the host is was on and vice versa, but it won't be able to communicate with the host it is booted on.  What gives with this?  I've seen this issue for a long time and tried searching to figure it out and have been unable to.  Any ideas on how to resolve it so that the host is essentially no different than the other machines on the network?

I found some pages talking about disabling a Citrix DNE LightWeight Filter.  I disabled this under the hosts network adapter properties and this did fix the issue.  Any ideas why this need to be done?
