Why is network messed up on new install

Just installed a new vm with vmware 15.5 and windows 10 home guest and it can ping the host and the host can ping the guest but can't access a drive shared by the host. I've spent probably 2 hours comparing settings between other vm's that work and the new one. And it still doesn't work. I finally got it to see the drive but it says the password fails -- excuse me but that is the signon password of the host and it allows the signon but fails when trying to access the drive.

Why doesn't it do what probably 110% of the users would want out of the box?   If I try to share the host's shared drive in the vm settings, it shows up as "vmware-shared-drive" crap instead of the direct designation. I want to access it directly as a mapped drive k:. I've doing exactly that with another physical pc and 4 other vm's. This has been an issue with ever version of vmware workstation I've had (at least 4 different versions).

And of course VMware wants to upgrade me to version 17.
