Why does XP guest want reactivating when the host doesn't ?

Due to a motherboard failure I've just replaced my Motherboard, Processor and network card. My host O/S Win XP didn't need reactivating so presumably I still had enough yes votes from the other non-replaced components, however my Vmware (Workstaion 5.5) XP Guests are asking to be reactivated. I tried following the instructions in http://communities.vmware.com/thread/174657 to stop reactivation messages, but I just get a message telling me

"00:0c:29:2e:a6:e8" is not an allowed static Ethernet address.

Invalid MAC address specified.

Failure to configure ethernet0.

and if I leave the ethernet settings as "generated" rather than "static", then I get asked to reactivate.

Any suggestions as to why the guest would want to be reactivated when the host doesn't and any solutions on how to stop it ?
