I guess your question is invalid, as I just created bigger disks for a 2.6 kernel with workstation 6.5, and I'm pretty sure it has worked for a long time.
The "reccomended value for this OS" is 8GB, but I guess that's just a suggestion based on the normal size of the OS installation.
