Vmware Workstation Pro 14 - BSOD - vm3dmp.sys (Windows Server 2008 R2 x64)

Hello,

I've just installed Vmware Workstation Pro 14 and I have started a Windows Server 2008 R2 (x64) "old" virtual machine previously created with Vmware Workstation 10. After logging on, I have updated Vmware Tool and on restart I got BSOD:

PNF_SHARE:COUNT

*** vm3dmp.sys

Now I cannot loggin on because the BSOD appears systematically!

Can anyone help me?

Best

Stefano

The driver is vm3dmp.sys is related to the virtual video adapter VMware SVGA 3D.

Few things to check/try to work around the problem:

(1) Considering that it is an "old" VM, make sure that the hardware compatibility is set to version 14 to match that with the software version.

(2) If #1 does not work, try disabling 3D acceleration

(3) try to boot into safe mode and uninstall from Device Manager the VMware SVGA 3D driver. I don't think you can uninstall VMware Tools in safe mode as the Windows MSI service is not started. I don't know if F8 is the way to get into Safe Mode in Windows 2008 R2, but if it is, choose the "Power On to Firmware" so that the VM has keyboard focus and you can press the F8; otherwise it could happen too fast and the F8 will not work.
