VmWare Workstation Sux

Firstly, downloading the program took 4 and a half hours, then i went to install it only ro find out i needed more files, i got help from a friend and after another 6 hours got it installed only to descover that VMWare Workstating is the biggest load of crap I have ever come across, it is a waste of time, effort and it is not all it is meant to be, out of 10, I would give it a 1 for effort.

I am very dissapointed in the program, it's speed is slower the booting an old P1, It is NOT a clone image of your excisting OS, it loades another version of W7 and it is like staring all over, there are no drivers for graphics, sound or any other PNP if you don't have them on a dist you are stuck.

Logging in to the workstation is slower then booting up my own pc and then i still had to figure out switching between windows...

Well after wasting a day i desided to remove the trash, It would not uninstall so i had to remove it myself, from Program's fikes and the registry and do i system check...

My advice to anyone that might read this message, Don't wast your time loading the program, REMEMBER it is only a 30 day trial after that you need to buy the serial.

So to anyone out there, you have it from me, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME

While a lot of problems have to do on your side of things, most of us here would disagree with just about everything you stated. Performance is based off of your system hardware not the program, and it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. If you were trying to run the latest and greatest graphics intensive game within a VM, go figure its not going to do as well as if it was running directly on hardware.

Taking 4+ hours to download has more to do on your internet connection speed, unless they were experiencing high download traffic. That and of course its a 30 day trial, it is a product you need to pay for why would anyone give it away for free? If you're so unhappy with VMware Workstation, I doubt you will find any product from Microsoft or Citrix which will reach your expectations.

Hello,

Moved to the VMware Workstation forum.

As for slow download? The image for Worksation 7.x is pretty large, so if your internet connection is not high speed then yes it can take a while to download.

As for not having all the bits? Workstation ships as an installable image, however, there are some requirements for the OS involved that you need to also install. Windows has .NET requirements and Linux has other requirements. This is typical for most software thesedays.

As for slow performance? Workstation on slow hardware leads to slow performance, it runs at roughly 80-90% of your hardware depending on the workload. It also depends on how much memory you have in your system if you have very little memory, workstation and like products will NOT be helpful.

As for another OS image? This is how VMware products work, it is another OS image for all VMs. Not containers or sharing of an image.

You need to read up more on virtualization and VMware products in general, everything you stated is not really a problem with VMware products but a misunderstanding on how the products actually work. Before claiming the product has issues, you may wish to understand the product and how it works.

Fan Controller / Temp. Display (TS-07)

Product Description

The Thermal-Star LCD Media Panel 7-in-1 Card Reader / Fan Controller / Temp. Display fits in any standard 5.25" drive bay and allows monitoring and control of up to 4 fans. It also reports temperatures from 4 temperature probes and will activate an alarm if one of the probes reports a temperature above the set threshold. All of the reporting is done via a back-light Blue LCD display that can report the temperatures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit. If that weren't enough, the panel also has a 7-in-1 card reader with both CF and MS card slots. An eSATA port is also integrated, leaving no space on the panel unused.

Features

7-in-1 Card Reader

The card reader supports both CF and MS cards, the most popular flash media.

Automatic or Manual Fan Control

While the panel has 4 knobs for controlling each fan channel directly at the press of a button it can switch over to "Auto" mode and control the fans based off of the temperatures reported by its temperature probes.

Four Channels for Fans

The panel has four separate power channels for controlling four fans independently.

Four Temperature Channels

With four included temperature probes, the LCD display can show the current temperature readings from each probe.

4 color Back-Light LCD Display

To aid reading of the LCD display in the dark, it is back-light with a cool blue glow. The display reports the current fan control status (manual or auto), the RPM of any one of the fans it is controlling, the temperature reported by any one of the temperature probes and the current setting for the temperature alarm. The temperatures can be displayed in either Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Temperature Alarm

The adjustable temperature alarm will beep when one of the temperature probes reports a temperature that is higher than the alarm's chosen temperature setting.

My question is what were your expectations for the product?

Was it for near native high end gaming?

Damaged has been done and once you uninstalled it, nothing much we all here can do. Next time, hopefully you don't mind to come here again, share your problem and seek forumers opinion or advice. With arms wide open, we will glad to help you. Don't just wacked everything and bemoaned about the product without actually know the cause of this issue.

When I heard about VMware, i was interested, cool wow, I can run my windows and switch to another window so i can go to sites and download programs or cracks and my W7 os would be safe should a virius be on the workstation, so after reading on the site and what others wrote i thought, why not,

After lots of time i managed to load the program without any help, not knowing the program I took the chance, what i did not expect is the i'd have to put my W7 disk in, i was under the impression that this VMware Workstation was it's own os, anyway i went ahead and loaded the workstation, i then loaded the extra toos and checked through the setting, seeing if i could cahange the graphics driver, NO WAYS, the mouse was so slow to respond I looked at more settings, and could not get that right,

At first, i tried ctrl + G to switch windows, nothing worked, i had to reboot my system, after that i tried again and it workstation was ever so slow to respond, I knew it was not my W7 os, it was running perfectly,

What i was hoping for was a window's that would look and behave just like the one i have installed and at a click of a button i would see another window, no such luck!!!

As I said I have removed all installed files, in program's and in the reg file, I was very disappointed, what do you expect from a 14 year old? no, i dont have paicients when i want something to work, i want it to work properly,

i have been on pc's since i was 5, built my first pc at 8 and loaded everything myself, even sorted out program problems... ever since then, i know im not the words top genious, but im no dummy when it comes to an os...

So I ask, why design a program like the workstation when one can just load another os and use a boot manager for switching os's?

So where is this vertual windows im supposed to see? I might be getting off the beaten track but all I wanted was a clone of my desktop what is see on my desktop is what i was hoping to see on the workstaion, I did not get that!

As khughes stated, many would disagree with you on the merits of virtualization. I have been using VMware products in a production business environment since 2002 with great success!

I understand that your needs are a bit different, but would suggest that you read the following:

http://www.vmware.com/virtualization/what-is-virtualization.html

Virtualization IS something that could be a benefit to you! It sounds like you enjoy new technology and virtualization can help you in your endevours. Yes, you can setup a multiple boot environment, but it is limited to the PC it is installed on. I like to test new Operating Systems, so I install them on a virtual machine for testing instead of using dedicated hardware. I can move them between my laptop and desktop PCs as needed.

You might also check out pre-built virtual machine (appliances) for your initial testing. You can find them here:

http://www.vmware.com/appliances/

good luck.........Bruce

So I ask, why design a program like the workstation when one can just load another os and use a boot manager for switching os's?

Because switching the installed OS by rebooting the system is old technology. Since 2002 I don't use that anymore.

I run many flavours of VMware products in business and VMware Workstation and Server in business and at home. Today I can't imagine anymore how to do my work without that. If I would have to reboot my laptop everytime I need another OS or the same OS with a different build or software inventory or if I need just another box to test something without harming my host system...huh...that would give me a hard time.
