VMware workstation was unable to claim the device

VMware workstation was unable to claim the device (No such file or directory)

I installed a Logitech 4000 web cam in XP Pro as guest under a host FC4. It worked just fine the first time but subsequent reconnection gave the above message. Any ideas?

Which version VM Workstation are you using ?

Excuse my ignorance is this attached via USB ?

If it is check the VM settings for the VM guest.

Many thanks

Version 5.5.3-34685 and yes it is USB.

I have tried various things like:

added usb_video to /etc/hotplug/blacklist

added usb.generic.skipsetconfig = "true" to the .vmx file

added usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto 0 0 to /etc/fstab

I'm getting the same error message.

HW: IBM Thinkpad T43p

host: SuSE 10.2 linux

Vmware workstation e.x.p. build 39849

guest: WinXP

I'm trying to run Motorola Software Update (MSU) with my V325i cellphone plugged into the USB port. It gives this message.

Other SW, such as Bitpim, works. My guess is that something that MSU does with USB is not supported by Vmware. The broader impact of this error is that vmware is not perfectly supporting USB.

Try to plug an USB 1.1 hub in between

Thanks for the idea; I'll look for a hub and try that.

Here's something I forgot to mention. After I get that error when that particular program (MSU) tries to use USB, some thing gets damaged in the USB driver. Any future program, even programs that used to work fine, now trying to access USB will also get the same error, until I reset things (IIRC by unplugging and plugging).
