Recently upgraded my laptop to Unbuntu 20.04, and some time before VMware Workstation to 15.5.6.
After the upgrade, I get DLSym_Null crashes on a Windows 10 guest that used to run fine before.
Machine is an older Thinkpad with the closed-source NVIDIA graphics drivers.
When disabling 3D, the problem doesn't happen anymore, but I need 3D for some of the tools in the guest system.
Any ideas? (I don't have a support contract with VMware, so I cannot request official support.)

Would you please upload the vmware*.log which locates in the VM folder? Thanks a lot
I took the liberty to anonymize my (public) hostname and IP address.
Well, I would but:
"The file type (.log) is not supported. Valid file types are: jpg, gif, png, pdf, pptx."
Shall I rename vmware.log to vmware.gif? 🙂
So since I cannot attach the logfile itself, here's the leading and trailing portion:

Finally had the time to run some more tests.
Started a fresh Windows 10 (x86_64) guest installation. It crashed during the end of installation with the same error.
I noticed there's an update available to 15.5.7 build-17171714, so I updated.
With this version, the freshly installed VM does not crash anymore, and appears to be usable.
However, the older VM (also Windows 10 guest) still continues to crash at the end of the boot process.

It looks like this:
Well, "message cannot exceed 20000 characters". 😞
It's 240 KB long …
Trying to post just the relevant portion before the crash:
And here's the start of the file:
So question: suppose I consider upgrading to 16.0, how likely will the problem go away with the new version?
It is very unlikely for the problem to go away with an upgrade.
How old is the Thinkpad? What is the Nvidia graphics card? If the graphics card is too old that it doesn't support OpenGL 4.x/SM4.1/SM5.0, any upgrade won't solve the problem.
You could try downgrading the hardware compatibility down (VM -> Manage -> Change Hardware Compatibility)
For attachment of the vmware.log file, you could try zipping the log file and attaching it. I have seen posts where the vmware.log was in zip format.
It's a Thinkpad T510. According to the ThinkPad Wiki, it was sold 2010/2011, so it's about 10 years old.
glxinfo says it supports OpenGL 3.3.0.
Strange only: before upgrading the OS from Ubuntu 16.04 to 20.04, the very same VM with VMware 15.x did work on that machine …
I'll try the HW compat downgrade. Not sure though, "No DirectX 10.1" support might become an issue. One of the purposes of the VM is to run Altium Designer in it, and they require DirectX 10 – as I said, it did work before on that hardware …
The lowest HW compatibility version that supports DX10 is Workstation 12.x. DX10.1 requires Workstation 15.x while DX11 requires Workstation 16.x. But I am not optimistic 12.x will solve the problem either. There is another thread in VMware Player have similar crash with Player 16.x; the video card was also old (circa 2008) but the poster of that thread had a desktop (so a graphic card upgrade would be an option).
The 15.0 documentation indicates OpenGL 3.3 as the requirement for Linux hosts to have DX10/DX10.1.
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/15.0/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-EA588485-718A-4F...
For Workstation 12.x, the documentation lists out OpenGL 3.3 as the minimum for Linux hosts to have DX10 capability in the VM.
https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-Workstation-Pro/12.0/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-EA588485-718A-4F...
However, going by Shader Model, the most logical would be
DX10 - SM4 in guest -> OpenGL 4.0 or higher on host
DX10.1 - SM4.1 in guest -> OpenGL 4.1 or higher on host
From the vmware.log, looks like VMware software used OpenGL 3.2.

>> Did the driver change with the upgrade of Ubuntu host OS?
Not that I know of, but possible. I see Nvidia did update the driver in 2019, so it's possible an older version had been there before.
I'll try switching to the Nouvaeu driver for a test.
Switched to Nouveau, and everything works fine. 😊
Oh, and I'm quite surprised, it doesn't need that dreadful
mks.gl.allowBlacklistedDrivers = "TRUE"
anymore. Given that the Nvidia driver also suffered from other problems (garbage on all GLX regions after suspend/resume), switching (back*) to Nouveau looks like a good step for elderly hardware like this.
*) I think I have been using it some years before, but back then, VMware actually failed with Nouveau on that hardware.
