Running Workstation 9.0.1 on Linux 64 bit and recently I have begun receiving the following
when launching a VM.
-----------------------
Popup Window 'Software Updates'
The following software is available for download:
VMware Tools for WIndows 2000 or later version 9.2.2
If you do not download VMware Tools, your virtual machine may
not be updated with the latest version.
What would you like to do?
-----------------------
I select 'Download and Install'
-----------------------
Popup Window 'Error'
There was a problem updating a software component.
Try again later and if the problem persis contact VMware Support
or your system administrator.
Click 'Ok'
Focus returns to the 'Software Updates' popup
--------------------------
With the same error in the 'Details' window.
There was a problem updating a software component.
Try again later and if the problem persis contact VMware Support
or your system administrator.

Thanks. There is no problem with host networking that I am aware of
since I am posting this from the host. I am wondering if the update failed
or was interrupted at some point and is in a half-state.
**FIXED**
Well after much adieu, I opted to uninstall Workstation 9.0.1 and reinstall using my 9.0.0
installer file. Once I was in 9.0.0 I launched a VM which gave me the dialog about needing to update
tools. Oddly, it updated the entire Workstation to 9.0.1. Once it finished I launched a VM again,
I again received the unable to update tools dialog. Undaunted, I clicked it again, it failed again, so
I clicked it again. Finally it says, nothing to do. Odd. In any case it seems all is well again, my VM has
networking and sound which were both in a broken state.
Arrrrgh. It is back again today. Receiving messages about needing to update to 9.2.2 tools
but clicking update resutls in failure. : (
At least my current tools are working.
1} May have missed itbut what is the 64-bit Linux host?
2) You would need to search but you can download tools from a VMware Server as an ISO. Perhaps somebody can tell you where to go from there after you mount the ISO in the guestg - I've never needed to do it.
3) As you have found out it not mandatory to update VMware tools and you can turn off message from Eidit -> Peferences ->. Update You may not wishi to update the tools to the WS 9 version as they are, in my oinion worse since there is no GUI.
4) You are lucky the automatic update to WS 9 succeeded. The VMware servers are unreliable if you upldate within tghe plrogram. an,d thke mesagesyou get are common Try downloadinig the enirte bundle if you needeed to do an upgrade again (hoepfully yolu won't)
