VMware won't start in Ubuntu 7.10

I've had the latest version of VMware installed on Ubuntu 7.04 for a while now without problems. But today, I just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.10 and VMware won't start. When I click on the VMware icon I get "Starting VMware Worksation" but nothing happens after that.

run it from an xterm, and any errors should be displayed within the xterm

I got an error message that told me to go to http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1623 for more info and I downloaded the file and everything seems to work now.

I've just installed Ubuntu 7.10 (for the first time) as a Guest OS, in Workstation 6 .

The install went fine, but I'm having a problem installing the tools.

I've installed the tools, and now see a Tools directory on the Ubuntu desktop.

When I go into the directory, I see a zip file, and an rpm file.

When I try installing the rpm with the Archive Manager, an error is displayed that the manager doesn't support that format.

Does Ubuntu have a gui-based package manager, or do I need to invoke rpm from the command line?

thanks

In a nutshell, Ubuntu doesn't do RPM's.

Untar the tar file and install from there.

Thanks Mike.

I'm confused- if ubuntu doesn't do rpms, why did vmware dump an rpm when I clicked on install VMware tools?

Unfortunately, there is not a directory on my system called ~/vmware-tools-distrib

in my ubuntu vm, and I've made sure I've spelled it correctly.

There is a directory on the desktop that looks like a DVD icon, called VMWare Tools. Whn I double click on it, I see the rpm and zip files.

Maybe this is why 7.10 isn't listed as a compatible guest OS with VMware 6

>>Tar file??
>>Who said anything about a tar file?

I mounted the Linux.ISO on my system and here are the contents.

VMWARETO.RPM

VMWARETO.TGZ

The .TGZ file is a tar file that's gzipped.

tar zxvf vmwareto.tgz

Where did LINUX.ISO come from??? Are you even running vmware?

What happens when you click on "Install Vmware Tools", from the VM menu?

Linux.iso is the iso image that is mounted on a Linux VM when you do an "Install VMware Tools".

When you clicked "Install VMware Tools" and you found the RPM, did you see the .TGZ?

Don't take my work for it. Google "install vmware tools ubuntu 7.10".

Good luck,

mike

I saw the rpm and another file, which I thought was a zip file, but it was probably a TGZ.

However, I can't seem to find them now.

The directory mentioned in this post,

http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-vmware-tools-hgfs-module-on-ubuntu-gutsy-gibbon-7.10

isn't on my system, so I cannot untar that file
